Silverado, Cruze diesel, Impala boost Chevrolet

“It’s one of our big stars in the Denver market,” said Craig Eppling, General Motors’ regional communications manager, of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado at a lunch Wednesday at the Denver ChopHouse & Brewery.

I spent the week of Sept. 9 with a new Silverado 1500 4-by-4. It carried three of us – Jan, Ila DuBois and me – through a severe rainfall on Saturday night, Sept. 14, near Stoneham while returning from a dinner at Ron and Jeanne Davis’ home in Sterling.

The downpour cut off all vision ahead of us on the dark night on Colo. 14; I finally eased off onto a wide turnoff east of Stoneham and waited for a bit of letup before continuing west. (The ’14 Silverado was featured in yesterday’s Saturday Drive in The Post.)

Eppling, of Dallas, has succeeded Richard James in overseeing Chevrolet communications through the western U.S., and was here for a view of Denver. “I’ve snow-skied the Colorado mountains several times and look forward to getting to know more of the city.”

Eppling was interested in the fact I’ve driven three Chevrolets in the past four weeks, including the Cruze Turbo Diesel and Impala, besides the Silverado. “Those three, in particular, and our current profitability make this a positive time for Chevrolet,” he said.

A native of New Orleans, Eppling began working as a teenager in his father’s Chevrolet dealership. He has been with GM for almost 30 years.

3-millionth mile for Irv, ’66 Volvo

Remember the guy who keeps driving that old Volvo, a million miles after a million miles?

Irv Gordon and his 1966 Volvo P1800 coupe passed the 3-millionth mile last week on the Seward Highway, Alaska Highway 1. It’s been Gordon, of New Jersey, and his cherry red Volvo along the road since he bought it 47 years ago.

“It’s not about getting to the 3 million miles; it’s about the trips that got me to the 3 million miles,” Gordon said. “I never had a goal to get to 1 million, to 2 million. I just enjoyed driving and experiencing life through my Volvo.”
