Ferrari theme park to open at PortAventura resort near Barcelona


Ferrari has announced plans to open its first theme park in Europe, bringing the prancing horse to the PortAventura resort near Barcelona.


Due to open in 2016, the 75,000 meter square Ferrari Land promises to include Europe’s fastest and highest vertical accelerator and a 250-room hotel in the shape of an F1 front wing, billed as Ferrari’s first five-star hotel. The project, involving an overall investment of $138 million, will be built by private equity firms Investindustrial and KKR, under licence from Ferrari.


Andrea Perrone, CEO of Ferrari’s branding division, said that after the opening of  Ferrari World in the United Arab Emirates  in 2010 the luxury sports car manufacturer had received many requests to build new parks around the world.


Perrone said the company welcomed the opportunity to bring the spirit of Ferrari to Spain, where we have many fans and followers.


The Spanish park will be about a third of the size of the one in Abu Dhabi.


More Ferrari parks may be in the works, said Perrone, as the company evaluates proposals to lend its name to other parks outside Europe.


About four million people a year visit PortAventura which is hoping to boost the number to five million once Ferrari Land is built.


The announcement comes as many theme parks across Spain are struggling to cope with decreased domestic demand during the country’s economic crisis.

Toyota reverses stance on offering CarPlay in its vehicles


If you’re waiting for Apple’s new iPhone mirroring technology to come to a car that’s slightly more affordable than a Ferrari, there’s good and bad news.


Toyota backtracked on an initial claim that it would start offering Apple’s new  CarPlay  feature on its models in 2015.


Despite being an automotive showcase, Apple very nearly stole the limelight at this year’s  Geneva Motor Show  with the official unveiling of CarPlay. The new feature will enable drivers to have their iPhone’s screen and many of its apps mirrored on their car dashboards in a way that makes them safe to use while keeping two hands on the wheel.


It means that voice calls, music library, turn-by-turn navigation and messaging are just a touchscreen press or voice command away while on the move. The first companies to pledge to supporting the new system are Ferrari, Volvo and Mercedes, all of whom had working versions of CarPlay on their stands and all of whom confirmed new models with CarPlay would be on sale before the end of the year.


Other car companies that have pledged to adopt CarPlay soon include BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and last, but by no means least, Toyota.


On Wednesday, the company took to its official blog to highlight the benefits of CarPlay and to announce that come 2015 that the system would be offered on some Toyota cars. However, on Thursday the post had been replaced with  a statement that read: A previous version of this article said Apple CarPlay would be in Toyota cars from 2015. This is incorrect and we are happy to put the matter straight. No announcements have been made about if and when Apple CarPlay will arrive in Toyota cars.


None of the other car companies listed by Apple as eventual CarPlay partners have yet made a statement as to when to expect the technology in their own cars, however there is some good news, for Mercedes owners, anyway.


The German company has confirmed that it is in the process of developing a way to retrofit CarPlay to some of its existing models and hopes to be able to offer an installation service before the end of 2014.

BMW X4 Coupé to make New York debut


The latest in the German carmaker’s growing range of all-wheel-drive crossover vehicles will be making its first public appearance at the New York International Auto Show in April.


Conceived as a car that offers the looks and elegance of a coupé with the presence and performance of a ‘soft-roader’ i.e. a vehicle that isn’t really built to climb every mountain or ford every stream the X4 promises to be quite potent all the same.


It will be offered in the U.S. with a choice of two TwinPower turbo engines, the biggest of which offers 300 hp on tap and a 0-100 kph time of just 5.2 seconds. Badged as the X4 xDrive35i, it will also offer BMW’s rather excellent, progressive all-wheel-drive system that’s just as good for aiding in cornering as it is for keeping wheels spinning when the terrain gets a bit muddy.


The car will also come with an 8-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission with shift paddles as standard when it goes on sale in the U.S. later this year.


The New York International Auto Show gets underway on April 16 with the first of two press days before opening to the public on April 18.

Can magnets help autonomous vehicles stick to the road?


Volvo seems to think so and has just completed a research project in its native Sweden that integrated them into the road surface to help cars identify where markings are and to stay in lane.


As such, magnets could be a potentially simple and very cost effective solution to an often complex problem: communicating to self-driving vehicles where the road is and where it is going.


Existing solutions, be they GPS positioning, cameras, batteries of radar or laser sensors, are all effective, but they are also more expensive and each has limitations. Poor weather or poor light can impinge on a camera’s performance, whereas a GPS system can lose the signal.


Volvo’s project, carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), took small magnets, measuring just 40x15mm, and embedded them in a pattern 200mm below the road surface on a 100-meter stretch of road. It also fitted a car with magnetic field sensors.


The magnets create an invisible ‘railway’ that literally paves the way for a positioning inaccuracy of less than one decimeter. We have tested the technology at a variety of speeds and the results so far are promising, says Jonas Ekmark, preventive safety leader at Volvo Car Group.


But as well as guiding self-driving cars, the magnets could be used for other safety purposes. For example, during severe snowfall, they would help to indicate where road lane markings are to any type of car fitted with sensors.


They could also be used as an automatic switch for activating a car’s safety systems for example, if it were to leave the road altogether in the course of an accident. And by using magnets as a guide, it is conceivable that road lanes could be made narrower.


Our experience so far is that ferrite magnets are an efficient, reliable and relatively cheap solution, both when it comes to the infrastructure and on-board sensor technology. The next step is to conduct tests in real-life traffic, explains Ekmark.


Claes Tingvall, traffic safety director at the Swedish Transport Administration, agrees: The test results are very interesting, especially when adding the potential for improved safety as well the advantages for the development of self-driving vehicles. A large-scale implementation of road magnets could very well be part of Sweden’s aim to pioneer technology that contributes to sustainable mobility, says Tingvall.


The tests form part of Volvo’s large-scale autonomous driving pilot scheme, which is currently underway in Gothenburg and will eventually see 100 self-driving cars taking to the city’s roads for comprehensive testing in all typical driving conditions.


Our aim is for the car to be able to handle the driving all by itself. Accurate, reliable positioning is a necessary prerequisite for a self-driving car, explains Ekmark. He adds: It is fully possible to implement autonomous vehicles without changes to the present infrastructure. However, this technology adds interesting possibilities, such as complementing road markings with magnets.


As well as Volvo, Nissan is currently undertaking similar large-scale testing of its autonomous driving technology and both companies are dedicated to rolling out self-driving features to production cars by 2020.

Nissan's Z car tugs at the heart strings of auto enthusiasts


Nissan’s well-known Z rear-drive sports car that started in the 1970s still pulls at the heart strings of driving enthusiasts with its sporty, two-seat cabin, low-to-the-pavement stance, racetrack-ready stiff ride and strong V-6 power.


Race day sensations are even greater in the top-of-the-line 2014 370Z NISMO model, where power is tuned up to 350 horses, suspension is so taut the car corners like it’s on rails, and brakes are the largest in Z car history.


Best of all, Nissan held the line or reduced pricing on its Zs for 2014.


The starting retail price for the 2014 370Z Coupe dropped some $3,000 from its predecessor, and the price for the top-of-the-line, 2014 370Z NISMO was unchanged.


Specifically, starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $30,800 for a base, 2014 370Z Coupe with 332-horsepower V-6, six-speed manual transmission and 18-inch, high-performance tires. The 2014 370Z Coupe with same engine and a six-speed manual with SynchroRev Match a feature that has won raves because it makes downshifts quicker and smoother starts at $33,830. The more powerful 2014 370Z NISMO starts at $43,830.


Among the exclusive standard features on the NISMO are an Alcantara-finished steering wheel, 19-inch, forged alloy wheels by Rays Engineering and a plaque on the center console noting the vehicle’s model year and serial number.


Rear-wheel drive, sports car competitors include the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe, which has a 323-horsepower V-6 and a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $24,550 with six-speed manual and 18-inch, all-season tires. The Camaro also is offered as an SS model with a 426-horsepower V-8. Starting retail price for the Camaro SS is $34,350 with six-speed manual and 20-inch, summer performance tires.


Another rear-wheel drive, V-6-powered competitor, the 2014 Ford Mustang Coupe, has a starting retail price, including destination charge of $23,335 with 305-horsepower V-6, six-speed manual and 17-inch tires. Ford also offers the Mustang with V-8, starting at 32,035, and supercharged V-8, the top of the line Mustang Shelby GT500, starting at $55,935.


Note that unlike the two-seat 370Z, the Camaro and Mustang have smallish back seats for two and are larger, overall, than Nissan’s Z.


As expected, the Z car, where premium gasoline is recommended, and its V-6 competitors Camaro and Mustang are not fuel sippers.


They all carry federal government fuel economy ratings of 18 or 19 miles per gallon in city driving, which is akin to the rating for a 2014 Toyota Highlander sport utility vehicle with V-6. Highway ratings for the sports cars with V-6s range from 26 or 27 mpg for the Z and Camaro to 31 mpg for the base Mustang. These numbers are higher than the highway mileage estimate for the Highlander.


Still, U.S. sales of mainstream sports cars declined last calendar year, and sales of the Z cars fell 10.6 percent to 6,561.


The Z cars didn’t change much for 2014.


Nissan further bolstered the NISMO Z for speedy travel by adding a longer front nose for more downforce and special side sills and new rear bumper for smoother airflow around the car.


Styling-wise, dark gray paint with red pinstripe is added at the lower front and rear fascias to differentiate the NISMO models from lesser Z cars.


All 2014 models of 370Z continue with Nissan’s squat, strong, exterior appearance that’s unlike that on any other car. It reminds some observers of a car body composed of flaps rather than graceful curves.


Inside, the two seats provide good support, and Nissan uses hold-fast fabric seat inserts to ensure people stay put during the ride. The three round gauges directly in front of the driver and three other round gauges atop the center of the dashboard are reminiscent of earlier Zs and are easy-to-read references on the car’s operation.


But larger-sized adults may feel confined in the compact, low-to-the-ground interior, particularly since side windows are short, height-wise, and views out the back and rear sides are restricted. Indeed, the driver of the test 370Z NISMO tired of looking directly at the tailpipes of pickup trucks and SUVs in front.


The test model, with a price of more than $46,000, had a $790 optional rearview camera. But the image was displayed in a small square in the left corner of the inside rearview mirror and was tiny compared with other cars’.


To be sure, the 370Z NISMO was a blast to drive, with a point and go personality. Steering response was quick; power from the 3.7-liter, double overhead cam V-6 came on quickly, peaking at 276 foot-pounds at 5,200 rpm. The high-performance tires had lots of grip to propel the car swiftly. The low center of gravity and the suspension that held the car body down firmly gave the speedy Z an agile feel. A driver can push the car hard in curves and marvel at its composure.


But the ride was busy and noisy all the time. Highway bridge expansion cracks sent major vibrations to passengers. City road bumps and even some sunken manhole covers could create a choppy and jarring ride.


Wind noise wasn’t noticed in the test car, but it may have been drowned out by the loud road noise from the tires and engine sounds.


The 6.9 cubic feet of trunk space is shallow and seems like a large shelf. A hot pizza placed under the long rear liftgate quickly steamed up the Z car’s rear window.


The Z has six air bags, traction control, antilock brakes and electronic dynamic control. But some safety items, such as blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning, are not offered. Options in general are minimal.


The 370Z also is offered as a roadster with a starting retail price of $42,280.

Rolls-Royce to go hybrid


The head of the luxury car maker has confirmed that using batteries will soon be the only way to keep offering clients 12-cylinder engines as environmental regulations continue to increase.


Speaking to Auto Express during the Geneva Motor Show, Rolls-Royce’s CEO, Torsten Müller-Otvos, described hybrid technology as essential in two years, maybe not from customer demand but through legal regulation on emissions, if the car company wants to continue using V12 powerplants.


Rolls-Royce has already toyed with an all-electric version of its Phantom flagship, the 100EX, but it failed to excite any of the brand’s existing clients and so never went any further than the prototype stage.


A Rolls-Royce cannot come with any kind of compromise, and both the recharging times and the range were not acceptable for our buyers but with hybrid technology that is no longer a problem, Müller-Otvos is quoted as saying.


Indeed to see how far hybrids have come since the original Honda Insight and mark I Toyota Prius, simply stop by the Ferrari, Porsche or McLaren stands at this year’s event.


Each car company is showcasing how backing up a petrol engine with an electric motor doesn’t just have to be about saving fuel or cutting CO2 emissions. Hybrid technology can also be used to make a car even faster and more powerful, essentially bringing new levels of performance.


In a separate interview with MotorTrend also conducted at Geneva, Tobias Moers, head of AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, confirmed that retaining the V12 engine was about not offering customers a compromized product and that the company will continue to build them: As long as there are customers. Some people like the extra sophistication. Maybe the next-generation V-12 needs a plug-in hybrid? Who knows?


Moers also let it slip during the interview that as well as maintaining V12s, the company has a new V8 engine coming and a new sportscar designed to challenge the Porsche 911, both of which will be making their debuts at the New York International Auto Show in April.

Jeep Cherokee returns for 2014, emerges as solid crossover contender


The last time a new Jeep Cherokee was announced, Bill Clinton was in office.


Yes, it’s been a while over a decade in fact but now, here we are with a brand new 2014 Cherokee making its triumphant return all these years later, garnering many accolades and being considered for truck of the year at January’s NAIAS auto show.


When you go that long between models, it’s hardly going to be the same car. In fact, with a new look and technology that wasn’t around back in 2001, it’s really the same car in name only. It’s a new era of the Cherokee, and after spending a week driving one I’m here to let you know how it fits in with the modern Jeep lineup and who might be interested in picking one up.


LOOKS
The 2014 Cherokee fits in a category that wasn’t really around back in 2001. It’s in the crossover SUV category, meaning it’s not a hulking large SUV of yesteryear, but is more roomy and spacious than a midsize sedan (even though its platform is the same as the Dodge Dart). The tradeoff for more legroom, though, is less storage space. You can’t have it all when the form is a small SUV.


It looks somewhat small from the outside but is a rather roomy vehicle inside. If you’re a Jeep fan and you’re hunting around, you’ll find it a nice middle ground between the smaller Compass and Liberty models, and the larger Grand Cherokee offering.


The Cherokee looks sharp though, inside and out, and it gets a signature Jeep look up front so you’re clear what it is from a distance.


ENGINE
My test vehicle featured a 3.2-liter V6 engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission, with an impressive 271 horsepower.
The V6 is a zippy motor that will get you moving, but isn’t overly powerful.


Base versions of the Cherokee feature a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine, and 184 horsepower. I didn’t test a model with this engine, but others who have say it’s a bit sluggish compared to the competition due to the vehicle’s weight. If you’re gonna get a Cherokee, V6 is the way to go if you want maximum performance.


A nice touch is the mode dial that allows you to adapt to situations like snowy conditions (which I definitely got to test out and was impressed), or try out a more sporty drive.


If you plan to tow with the Cherokee, the 2.4-liter engine can tow 2,000 pounds and the 3.2 liter engine can tow up to 4,500 pounds.


Front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations are offered on the Cherokee.


Keeping with the theme of this being a brand-new car essentially; forget about the off-roading focus of past Cherokees; the 2014 model does very well in the city, getting you around comfortably and fitting the family quite well unless you have a big brood. The ride is smooth, nimble and enjoyable on flat pavement. Can it still do some off-roading? Sure, and there’s one trim level aimed at that crowd (Trailhawk). But that’s not the overall focus with this relaunch of the Cherokee. This is aimed primarily at the city dwellers and families looking for crossover vehicles.


MPG
The V6 version of the 2014 Cherokee has official numbers of 19 city and 27 highway. I got between 20 and 21 mpg during my time with the vehicle decent numbers for this category.
On the base engine, the numbers are better: 22 city/31 highway and 25 combined (the upside of the less powerful engine is you get better mileage).


FEATURES
The tech in the Jeep Cherokee is all new a decade-plus passing will do that.


Standard features include: Bluetooth connectivity; 10 air bags (including driver/front passenger knee bags and rear seat-mounted air bags); Trailer Swap control (standard on 4Ã4); projector headlamps and LED tail lamps; dual-zone climate controls; AC power outlet (115 volt).


Optional features include: Heated steering wheel; Handsfree voice-to-text system; forward crash warning system with crash mitigation; LaneSense Lane Departure Warning Plus; Blind-spot monitoring; Rear Crosspath Detection; Rear back-up camera; Perpendicular and Parallel park assist (a first for Jeep); and Premium Audio (Alpine 10 speaker system, 506 watts)


The standard touchscreen and LED instrument cluster are both 5 inches; but you can upgrade to an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch full-color LCD cluster for a slightly larger view of all your information. The UConnect system is easy to learn and use, voice commands work well, and I also like the placement of the volume and forward/rewind buttons behind the wheel where your fingers already are placed it’s quite convenient.


PRICE
The base price for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is an affordable $22,995, but remember you’re getting the weaker engine. My test vehicle was a Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4Ã4 with the upgraded engine and convenience package and some other options, and came in at $31,480.


Four trim levels are offered: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk and Limited. … Trailhawk is the version most aimed at off-roaders (it only comes in four-wheel drive and features a suspension aimed at driving better in the dirt, among other changes).


BOTTOM LINE
The reincarnation of the Jeep Cherokee brings it into the modern era, adding all the technology that wasn’t around the last go-around, and adapting it to a new style of vehicle. Of all the Jeep offerings, it’s the best on fuel economy (a week area for the lineup as a whole) and should gain some buyers back due to its family-friendly size and decent starting price.


There’s a lot of strong competition in this area, from Ford’s Escape, Honda’s CR-V and a bunch more who may offer a better overall ride depending on the configuration on the Cherokee. But there’s no denying that Jeep’s reintroduction of the Cherokee nameplate has put another worthy contender on the map for folks considering a crossover, and may get folks to consider buying a Jeep who may not have done so prior to the launch of this vehicle for 2014.
